Are we having an impact? If so, on whom?
Do we in fact make a difference when we attend a political rally?
These are questions that I sometimes hear from folks attending rallies and protests - even after the June 14th NO KINGS day rallies. It’s certainly hard to determine the impact on everyday folks (i.e., potential voters) - how many people watched the rallies on T.V., on the internet…how many people changed their minds or even, how many people simply started questioning.
On June 14th, I joined millions of Americans who attended a NO KINGS rally…and spoke with folks at the Albany, N.Y. rally, where protestors lined up on Wolf Road - a 2.5 mile stretch - from Central Ave to Watervliet Shaker Road. I wanted to hear WHAT BROUGHT FOLKS OUT, the values that they wanted to convey, their vision for our country.
As I listened to folks and heard the loud honking and cheering coming from the passing cars, it was clear that all of us present - whether standing beside fellow protestors or driving by - felt empowered, energized and thrilled to be speaking out and sharing the values and beliefs that matter deeply to each of us! I’d call that having impact!
Take a listen:
I know for myself, when I feel empowered, when I feel energized, I will do something! I’ll get out there again. I’ll go door-to-door for political candidates that share my values. I’ll have more conversations with friends or folks that I meet at other rallies, events or even at family or friends’ gatherings…and no doubt, others will as well! Would love to hear your experience! When do you feel motivated to take action, to speak up?…and ultimately, to make a difference?
I always feel more energized and hopeful when I attend a rally.. that makes a difference to me when participating in other social actions
